Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #362
Question
The Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) and Ceiling Attenuation Class (CAC) are two widely recognized test standards for measuring acoustical ceiling tile performance. What do they test?
Answer
NRC describes the sound absorption performance of a material. It has a single-number rating between 0 and 1.0. The higher the number, the better the performance. CAC describes a material's ability to block airborne sound transmission between different areas. It indicates the ability of a material to function as a noise barrier versus an acoustic absorber. The higher the CAC, the better sound-blocking performance.
