    —The Architecture Puzzler

    Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
    Architecture Puzzler #357

    Question

Destroyed during the Bosnian War of the 1990s, this single-span bridge was reconstructed and reopened in 2004. What is the name of this famous bridge, originally constructed in 1566?

    Answer

Stari Most ("Old Bridge") was built across the Neretva River in Mostar during the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent, at the height of the Ottoman Empire. It is a single hump-backed arch, 13 feet (4 meters) wide, 100 feet (30.5 meters) long, and 65 feet (20 meters) high at its center. It was destroyed by a tank shell on November 9, 1993, and was later rebuilt using local materials.
