Architecture Puzzler #350
Question
House sizes worldwide have been increasing even as family sizes have been shrinking. As of the mid-1990s, the average family size in the United States was four, according to a report from the United Nations, while the average size of a new U.S. home was 1,600 square feet (150 square meters). At that time, only one of the following had a larger average new house size. Was it Japan, Kuwait, Israel, or Great Britain?
Answer
Kuwait. As of the mid-1990s, with an average family size of seven, Kuwait was building houses averaging 4,850 square feet (451 square meters). Japan was a close third after the U.S., with an average house size of 1,421 square feet (132 square meters) and an average family size of four. Great Britain was at four and 861 square feet (80 square meters), while Israel was at four with a 667-square-foot (62-square-meter) average.
