The Tempe Center for the Arts nears completion in Tempe, Arizona. The $65.7 million project is a collaboration between Architekton of Tempe and Barton Myers Associates, Inc. of Los Angeles. The 90,000-square-foot (8,400-square-meter) facility includes a 600-seat proscenium theater, 200-seat studio theater, 3,400-square-foot (320-square-meter) art gallery, and 3,000-square-foot (280-square-meter) multipurpose room.

The design draws inspiration from Pueblo Bonito, an Anasazi Great House at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. The different rooms within the building are like kivas, the main lobby forms a central gathering space, and the connecting corridors and lobbies act like streets and plazas. The building's form was inspired by the rock formations in Monument Valley, in northern Arizona and southern Utah. An extensive sculptural shed roof shelters the interior thermally and acoustically.

Located on Tempe Town Lake, on a 25.5-acre (10.3-hectare) former brownfield landfill site, the project also includes a sculpture garden. An artistic water feature funnels rainwater to the nearby riverbed. The Los Angeles, California, office of Arup served as structural engineer, lighting designer, and mechanical, electrical, and plumping engineer. The opening is scheduled for September 7.

New Orleans · 2007.0827
A new family center has opened at the New Orleans Mission in New Orleans, Louisiana. The two-story, 4,400-square-foot (410-square-meter) building will provide housing to transitionally homeless families. The project was funded by HomeAid, a national nonprofit provider of housing for the homeless, and designed by students at Tulane University's School of Architecture. Perez APC of New Orleans served as architect of record, working with Tulane University and Rodney A. Dionisio, a local architect. New Orleans-based JaRoy Construction, Inc. built the project.

HomeAid has registered the Family Center project with the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED program and expects it to obtain a Silver certification. Energy-efficient systems include a geothermal HVAC system; strategic glazing on the building to minimize sun exposure and reduce internal heat loads; and stack ventilation in the second-floor bedrooms, with high, sloping ceilings that direct hot air to operable windows.

Sustainable materials used in the center include paperless drywall, exterior composite siding of recycled wood fiber and cement, bamboo and cork flooring, and other flooring of recycled materials. Resin composite wall panels from 3form can be broken down and reused repeatedly. The large landscaped yard features several plants native to Louisiana and large amounts of bamboo.

Sioux Falls · 2007.0827
TSP, a regional architecture, engineering, and construction firm based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has acquired Group II Architects. Group II provides architecture, interiors, planning, and construction management services from offices in Marshall, Minnesota, and Sioux Falls. In the past year, the two firms have partnered on such projects as the Sibley Medical facility in Arlington, Minnesota, and the Marshall–Lyon County Public Library in Marshall.

Group II’s Marshall office will remain open under the TSP name. Employees in the Sioux Falls office of Group II will move to TSP’s Sioux Falls headquarters. With the acquisition, TSP now has 170 employees in eight offices in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wyoming.

Nashville · 2007.0826
Atlanta, Georgia-based CMMI, an architecture and interior design firm focused on hospitality, has revealed its interior design for the Hotel Palomar in Nashville, Tennessee. The hotel is set to be a focal point for Signature Tower, a planned 1,057-foot (322-meter) skyscraper designed by Atlanta, Georgia-based Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, Inc. The hotel is designed to occupy 12 of the tower's 70 stories, with the remaining space slated to house 400 high-end condominium units and 20,000 square feet (1,900 square meters) of commercial and retail space.

The Hotel Palomar interior design is classic contemporary, with natural finishes and clean lines. It will feature a warm, neutral color palette accented with white finishes. The guest rooms will be amply daylit and will capitalize on the dramatic views. The opening of Signature Tower and the Hotel Palomar is planned for 2010. LEED Certification will be sought.

Westwood · 2007.0824
The University of Kansas Hospital's new $25 million outpatient cancer center has opened on the hospital's Westwood, Kansas, campus. The Dallas, Texas, office of RTKL Associates Inc. designed the three-story, 138,000-square-foot (12,800-square-meter) facility, adapted from a 1950s-era office building. The structure was gutted to the shell and core and then completely rebuilt.

The center was designed for patient friendliness. Large windows provide views to the outside and allow daylight into the building. Translucent dividers in treatment areas allow light to pass through while still maintaining privacy. Warm colors and sound-masking systems help to create a soothing environment. RTKL's healthcare technologies group provided the medical equipment planning. Donald R. DeBord, Jr., served as vice president in charge of the project for RTKL. Kansas City, Missouri-based JE Dunn Construction served as general contractor.

Kermit · 2007.0823
Ground has been broken for a $13.1 million project to replace Winkler County Memorial Hospital in Kermit, Texas. Ascension Group Architects of Arlington, Texas, designed the new hospital, which will be smaller than the original and shift its focus to critical care. The new 19-bed hospital will total 34,000 square feet (3,200 square meters), including 27,400 square feet (2,550 square meters) of new space. Completion is expected by late 2008. A second phase will begin in May 2008 to build space for physical therapy, administrative offices, and other support functions. Dallas-based Ray F. Skiles Co., Inc. is serving as general contractor.
