Northern Virginia AIA Awards 2007
by ArchitectureWeek
The Northern Virginia chapter of the American Institute of Architects has announced its 2007 Design Awards. Twenty-one projects designed by architecture firms in northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area were recognized in the categories of residential, commercial, institutional, historic, interior, and unbuilt architecture.
This year's jury, from Princeton, New Jersey, bestowed four Awards of Excellence, fifteen Awards of Merit, and two special awards, for outstanding facade design and for the work of an intern. The winning projects are located in Washington, D.C. and nearby in Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland, with one far-flung project in Shanghai, China.
Residential Awards
The Spout Run Residence renovation in Arlington, Virginia, designed by David Jameson Architect, Inc., received an Award of Excellence. The project transformed a labyrinthine 1970's house within its original footprint.
The building is carved into a steep bluff, with a stucco base rooting the wood and glass above. Floor plates were incised to form multistory open spaces that create a sense of connection between the interior and the surrounding forest canopy. A cantilevered planar roof hovers above a clerestory, unifying interior and exterior spaces.
