Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #341
Question
What is autoclaving and why is it used?
Answer
Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) are typically cured using low pressure steam. Linear shrinkage of the units is reduced by autoclaving which is a method of curing concrete masonry units under high pressure and steam. This method is more expensive but CMU constructed walls cured using autoclaving require less control joints.
