Moser Design Group of Habersham, South Carolina, and Julie Sanford of Fernandina Beach designed the three cottages, part of the larger Amelia Park Development. Herning · 2007.0625
Ground has been broken for the Herning Center of the Arts in Herning, Denmark. The 60,000-square-foot (5,600-square-meter) facility will house the Herning Art Museum, Ensemble MidtVest, and Socle du Monde, with permanent and temporary exhibition galleries, a 150-seat auditorium, music rehearsal rooms, a restaurant, a media library, and administrative offices for the three entities.
Steven Holl Architects of New York City designed the single-level, curved-roof building to resemble a collection of shirtsleeves when viewed from above, taking a stylistic cue from a nearby 1960s building that houses part of the art collection — a former shirt factory shaped like a shirt collar. Continuing the fabric theme, a textile mesh will be used to texture the white concrete walls. All gallery spaces will be simple and rectangular, with lightweight, moveable interior partitions. On the interior, the shape of the roof will be emphasized with a simple white-plaster finish.
Sustainable features include a geothermal HVAC system, gray-water recycling, and daylighting. The project will also transform the flat site with a new 130,000-square-foot (12,000-square-meter) landscape of grass mounds and pools to conceal parking and service areas. Completion is expected by the beginning of 2009.
