AIA/SF Design Awards 2007

As usual, in their 2007 Design Honor Awards, the San Francisco Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) presents a wide array of projects ranging from abstract to earthy. The influence of Bay Area culture is evident in the depth of values expressed. The big local architecture school at UC Berkeley leaves its mark, too, with a number of faculty-related firms in the award ranks.
Hercules Public Library
In developing the new Hercules Public Library, the young city of Hercules, California, sought a strong civic presence in its downtown. Hammel, Green and Abrahamson, Inc. (HGA) and Will Bruder + Partners created an elegant sculptural library, with exterior brick material referencing the nearby historic buildings that once housed the city's namesake, the Hercules Power Company. The jury commented that this building represents the true spirit of transformative architecture in a community.
