The mechanistic worldview underlying contemporary architecture separates elements and creates an environment of autonomous fragments. The result is cities like Brasilia in Brazil, Chandigarth in India, the satellite towns in England and the new neighborhoods around Jerusalem, where the structured disconnection between the house and the street, the street and the neighborhood, the neighborhood and the city arouses a feeling of detachment and alienation.

DOMINUS IN DEPTH

Almost ten years ago, the Dominus Estate Winery was one of Herzog and de Meuron's first works in the U.S. to catch critical attention. To understand the design approach of this Pritzker and Stirling Prize-winning firm, and more importantly in terms of the architecture itself, it is worth taking a closer look.

SANTIAGO FIRE STATION

Sometimes designing a firehouse isn't just about fire trucks, bells, and red doors. In designing the 18th Firemen's Brigade in Santiago, Chile, architect Gonzalo Mardones Viviani found that he had to give careful consideration to the firehouse's role in the surrounding neighborhood of Viracura and to its function as a real "house," a home to the fire fighters who live there together with their families.

ART DEPOT

Museum franchising seems to be a growing trend. The Guggenheim is a well established worldwide franchise, and The Louvre is on its way. The New York-based Museum of Modern Art and Dia Art Foundation each have two sites, while the London-based Tate has four.
