AIA SAN FRANCISCO AWARDS The San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects has announced the winners of its annual design awards program. One of the Excellence in Architecture awards went to Fougeron Architecture for "1532 House" (photo by Richard Barnes). This house offers a twist to the traditional San Francisco infill typology: by taking advantage of an extra deep lot, two light courts interwoven with two volumes allow a variety of opportunities for indoor/ outdoor living. Next week we'll look at this and some of the other top award recipients.

HOLISTIC SPIRIT OF PLACE The mechanistic worldview underlying much of contemporary architecture can create a disconnect between people and their built environment, arousing feelings of detachment and alienation. A holistic-organic approach, by contrast, regards the socio-physical environment as a dynamic whole. Next week architect Nili Portugali will explain how this affects her approach to design and imbues her projects, such as the Ohel Shem Community and School Library, with a spirit of place.
