Artist and architect Matteo Pericoli created the architecturally themed mural, composed of 90 vinyl panels. Irving · 2007.0503
Construction recently began on a new Citizen & Immigration Services building in Irving, Texas, for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The Chicago, Illinois, office of 4240 Architecture designed the two-story, 50,000-square-foot (4,600-square-meter) facility to be at once approachable and dramatic.
The focal point of the L-shaped building will be the ceremony room, a double-height glass space that will be visible from adjacent Highway 114. A phrase from the naturalization ceremony will be displayed in four-foot- (1.2-meter-) high lettering on the facade, positioned such that the sun projects the lettering into the ceremony room. Each letter will be a cutout from a reproduction of the U.S. Constitution. The facility will also house interview rooms and administrative offices.
LEED Silver certification will be sought for the building. Energy-efficient features will include several forms of protection from the sun, such as overhangs, sun shades, and a pergola with sun-shading louvers. Many building materials, including brick, will come from local manufacturers.
The lead designer is Robert Benson, 4240's Chicago design director. The developer is JDL Castle Corporation of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Completion is expected in early 2008.
