Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #332
Question
The Roman Colosseum is an amphitheatre begun by Vespasian in AD 70 and completed by Domitian 12 years later. How many people could it seat: 15,000? 30,000? 50,000?
Answer
The elliptical 620- by 513-foot (189- by 156-meter) Roman Colosseum could seat 50,000 people and had an elaborate exiting system of vaulted corridors that could clear the structure in only a few minutes.
