    ENLIGHTENING WORKS

In interior spaces with unchanging light, people can feel cut off from the natural movements of time. To create a sense of delight and wonder, designer James Carpenter manipulates light with glass and color (photo by Balthazar Korab). He and other light artists take advantage of the changing nature of sunlight to reinforce people's connection to their surroundings. Next week writer Debra Moffitt will show us some examples of their work.

    AIA 2007 HOUSING AWARDS

The American Institute of Architects has announced 19 honorees in its 2007 Housing Awards Program. Among those chosen are the Plaza Apartments (photo by Tim Griffith) in San Francisco, designed by Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects in association with Paulett Taggart Architects. Inside are mini-studio apartments for chronically homeless people; outside is a colorful facade signaling a new direction for the neighborhood. Next week we'll look at the variety of ways in which Americans, rich and poor, are being newly housed.
