HOUSE ON RED HILL

Christopher Harty and Chris Botterill have designed the Red Hill Residence, a contemporary house for a young family that relocated from a busy city to Australia’s peaceful Mornington Peninsula. The two architects refer to this work not as minimalist, but as “restrained.” They consider the house a piece of modern design that conforms to many traditional guidelines of architecture. Next week, Jennifer LeClaire will show us around and explain how the house incorporates sustainable approaches but without a typical "green" aesthetic. (Photo by Peter Bennetts)

SAFEGUARDING AN EMBLEM

Some structures, like the Eiffel Tower, are icons of their cities. Some are emblematic of an entire country. In India, it is the Taj Mahal, a 17th-century mausoleum globally recognized by its incomparable splendor. However any visitor to the Taj Mahal today is quickly made aware of the fragility of the marble building and the damaging effect people and air pollution have had on it. Walls have cracked and marble has become tarnished. Next week, writer Ian Morley will describe the damage and the measures being taken to help protect the landmark.
