The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects announced its 2007 Design Award winners during its annual symposium in February. Recognized by this program are projects of design excellence — architecture and interiors — that were either built in New York City or designed by New York architects but built elsewhere.

One of the six projects receiving an Architecture Honor Award is the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and associate architect Perry Dean Rogers/ Partners Architects. The 65,000-square-foot (6000-square-meter) building, with an extraordinary cantilever that reaches out toward Boston Harbor, includes 18,000 square feet (1700 square meters) of galleries, a 350-seat multipurpose theater, a cafe, bookstore, education center, and offices.

The building has a vertical gradation between contemplative spaces for art viewing on the upper floors and the civic spaces on the lower floors and adjacent outdoor areas. The Boston Harborwalk at the north and west edges of the site extends into the building as a wood wrapper that folds into a public grandstand facing the water.   >>>
