    KUDOS FOR NEW YORKERS

The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has announced the recipients of its 2007 Design Awards program. Honors went to built architecture and interiors and to unbuilt projects. One of the two honor awards for interior architecture went to the firm Della Valle Bernheimer for restoring and updating 23 Beekman Place, the penthouse apartment and office of prominent 20th-century architect Paul Rudolph. In our next issue, we'll see how they approached on this daunting task, and we'll take a look at the other honor award recipients.

    BEACH HOUSE IN CHILE

On a beachfront near an abandoned mine on Chile's former "coal coast," the Mauleen House merges historical industrial connections with the raw beauty and energy of the location. With strong winds howling in from the Pacific Ocean and a scorching sun beating down on a strip of black-sand beach, the seafront property is not a "tranquil beach of the summer," says architect José Miguel Heras, of Factoria Ltda. Next week writer Paul Harris will explain how the house is a synthesis of its industrial heritage and a modernist vision of efficient resource use. (Photo by Jose Luis Saavedra)
