Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #322
Question
Aluminum does not "rust" — true or false?
Answer
This is true in that "rust" is an iron hydroxide or iron oxide that forms on bare ferrous metals that come in contact with air and water. However aluminum, under the same environmental conditions, forms a thin, tightly adhered film of aluminum oxide. It is transparent, nearly invisible, and noncorrosive, and it tends to prevent further oxidation of the aluminum.
