                                                        . . . THIS WEEK

    The Hague · 2007.0207
Construction continues on an urban residential block in the Fifth Quarter in the Wateringse Veld, The Hague, The Netherlands. Dutch firm FARO architecten bv, bna of Lisserbroek designed the project, which consists of 138 single-family homes around an inner courtyard. Most of the residences will be row houses, with some corner houses and patio houses on the outer edge. The outside of the block will be constructed in rough red brick. On the inside of the block, around the courtyard, the facades will alternate between brick and light gray wood. In the middle of the courtyard will stand a single house in the form of a tower topped by a tree, inspired by towers in Siena, Italy. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2007.

    Chicago · 2007.0207
Architecture, planning, and interior design firm Lohan Anderson of Chicago, Illinois, has promoted Basil W.C. Souder, AIA, to principal. Souder has worked closely with principals Dirk Lohan, FAIA, and Floyd D. Anderson, AIA, for over 20 years. His past Chicago projects include the award-winning master plan and reconstruction of North Burnham Park as part of the $606 million redevelopment of Soldier Field, and managing the design team for the award-winning Sky Pavilion addition to the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum. Souder will be responsible for day-to-day management of multiple projects, including CityGate Centre, a one million-square-foot (93,000-square-meter) office, hotel, retail, and performing arts complex in Naperville, Illinois.

    Colorado Springs · 2007.0206
The Colorado Board of Regents has approved an update to the Facilities Strategic Plan for the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. The long-range master plan creates a vision for sustainable campus development, including five-year, 15-year, and 100-year plans for campus growth. The plan makes use of natural stormwater drainage and features compact siting of buildings to preserve walkability, encourage socialization, and save open space. Slaterpaull Architects of Denver provided project management services on the project; Loebl Schlossman & Hackl of Chicago, Illinois, provided programming and master planning services; and the Denver office of EDAW provided landscape architecture and urban planning services.

    Baltimore · 2007.0201
Marks, Thomas Architects of Baltimore, Maryland, has promoted T. Michael Blake, AIA, to associate principal, and has hired Tom Liebel, AIA, LEED AP, as an associate principal. Blake joined the firm in 1996 and has over 16 years of experience on a wide range of project types. His portfolio of Baltimore-area projects includes Heritage Crossing, a mixed-income neighborhood; the Ritz-Carlton Residences; and student housing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and UM Baltimore County. Liebel has experience in adaptive reuse, environmentally responsible design, and brownfield sites, and will lead the firm's sustainable design practice. His past projects at the Baltimore office of Design Collective, Inc. include Tide Point, the adaptive reuse of a Baltimore manufacturing site for a business campus; the Munsey Building, an office building in Baltimore renovated for apartments; and the adaptive reuse of industrial buildings for the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Ohio.

    Tucson · 2007.0201
Construction recently began on the $10.4 million Gateway Medical Office Building in Tucson, Arizona. The architect on the project is Ascension Group Architects, an Arlington, Texas, firm specializing in healthcare. The multistory, 63,000-square-foot (5,900-square-meter) medical facility will rise next to the existing Northwest Medical Center. It will be constructed with a structural steel frame and concrete floors to allow flexibility in suite design. Special attention will be given to public area finishes with vinyl wall coverings, ceramic tile flooring, and tile ceilings. The building is scheduled to be ready for occupancy in fall 2007. Construction on a related project, a $5.1 million ambulatory surgery center within the medical office building, is expected to begin in June 2007 and be completed in January 2008.

    Palm Desert · 2007.0131
Construction documents are underway for Cook Corner Business Park, a new 100,500-square-foot (9,340-square-meter) mixed-use office and retail center located in Palm Desert, California. Smith Consulting Architects of Palm Desert and San Diego is providing complete architectural services for the project, which will comprise six two-story office buildings totaling 80,000 square feet (7,430 square meters), and 20,500 square feet (1,910 square meters) of retail and restaurant space. The buildings feature a subtle color scheme with contrasting accents, and entries accented with elements of glazing and stone veneer. Metal trellis overhangs and wall recesses provide shade in the courtyard area. A two-level parking garage with upper-deck metal trellises will be located adjacent to the office buildings. Smith Consulting Architects vice president Bill Sharon is directing the project.
