Also, VDTA recently promoted David Rasche, AIA, to principal, and Antonio Caliz to associate. An experienced project manager and designer, Rasche heads VDTA's information technology department. His current projects include a warehouse distribution center for McMaster-Carr in Elmhurst, Illinois, and a large-scale mixed-use project for Structured Development near downtown Chicago. Caliz joined VDTA in 2005, bringing 13 years of professional experience, including six years in Mexico and South America. Most recently he oversaw the $80 million campus expansion of Highland Park Hospital. Wylie joined ESA in 1997 and works on sustainable design, education, nonprofit, and religious projects. Tianjin · 2006.1213
Lee Harris Pomeroy Architects of New York City recently unveiled its design for a new 56-story luxury hotel and condominium building in the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area in Tianjin, China. Located in the center of a lake, the tower will comprise three intertwined cylindrical components inspired by the twisting forms of cypress trees. The structural form rotates two degrees per floor. Clad in green glass overlaid with a stainless steel grid structure, the tower will provide panoramic views of the surrounding area. Construction of the adjacent Bin Hai International Exposition Center, also designed by the firm, is in its final phase. Tianjin Architects & Consulting Engineers and the New York office of engineering firm Weidlinger Associates Inc. collaborated on both projects.

    Chicago · 2006.1213
SmithGroup principal Dan Mitchell, AIA, NCARB, has been named health and science studio leader at the firm's Chicago, Illinois, office, which currently operates as a single multidisciplinary studio focusing on health and science projects. Prior to that, Mitchell was a project designer and then a project manager at the London, United Kingdom, office of HOK International. SmithGroup's Chicago office will soon relocate to the historic Jewelers Building. Designed by the firm, the space features open work alcoves and daylit workstations. Also relocating will be SmithGroup's sister company, JJR, a landscape architecture, planning, urban design, civil engineering, and environmental science firm.
