Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #315
Question
In evaluating and comparing paints, a critical piece of information is the amount of volume solids in a particular paint. What does "volume solids" refer to?
Answer
"Volume solids" is the percentage of paint that remains on the surface after the solvents evaporate. Typically, the solids are the resins and pigments that form the paint film. Usually when comparing paints, the higher the volume solids, the better the paint and the higher the cost.
