URBAN DESIGN PRIZE TO CALTHORPE Architect and urban designer Peter Calthorpe has received the 2006 J.C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development from the Urban Land Institute. This award salutes his 30-year career of creating neighborhoods and communities that are livable, walkable, and diverse.

CHICAGO LANDMARK AWARDS Chicago is justly proud of its architectural heritage, marked by the great American architects Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and, more recently, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Helmut Jahn. As contemporary architects follow in these illustrious footsteps, modern Chicagoans work hard to preserve their built history.

WORLD OF CITIES Staking its reputation around an ethical debate, Venice, Italy's 10th Biennale Architecture Show presents the successes and challenges of 16 of the world's cities and asks: "can architects make a difference?" The "Cities, Architecture, and Society" exhibit curated by David Burdett, architect and professor at the London School of Economics, stops short of providing solutions, but states, "how we shape cities will determine the future of our planet."
