CHICAGO LANDMARK AWARDS Chicago is justly proud of its architectural heritage, marked by the great American architects Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and, more recently, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Helmut Jahn. As contemporary architects follow in these illustrious footsteps, modern Chicagoans work hard to preserve their built history.

WORLD OF CITIES Staking its reputation around an ethical debate, Venice, Italy's 10th Biennale Architecture Show presents the successes and challenges of 16 of the world's cities and asks: "can architects make a difference?" The "Cities, Architecture, and Society" exhibit curated by David Burdett, architect and professor at the London School of Economics, stops short of providing solutions, but states, "how we shape cities will determine the future of our planet."

RICHARD ROGERS STIRLING PRIZE The prestigious Stirling Prize has been awarded to the Barajas Airport in Madrid, designed by Richard Rogers Partnership in association with Estudio Lamela Arquitectos. The prize is given annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and cosponsor, The Architects' Journal. Now in its 11th year, the prize is named after the architect Sir James Stirling (1926-1992).

FREI OTTO PRAEMIUM IMPERIALE In late September 2006, the Japan Art Association announced the five recipients of the 18th annual multidisciplinary Praemium Imperiale prize. The architecture prize for lifetime achievement went to German architect and engineer Frei Otto, best known for his research and design of lightweight, high-performance tent structures.
