    Brandon · 2006.1017
Orlando-based HuntonBrady Architects has unveiled its Student Services Building at Hillsborough Community College in Brandon, Florida. The 60,000-square-foot (5,600-square-meter) building was designed with a linear, two-story atrium to imitate a shopping mall, where student services are treated like retail stores. HuntonBrady Architects received a 2005 design award from the Orlando AIA for the design.

    New York · 2006.1016
JRS Architect, P.C., of Mineola, New York, and Princeton, New Jersey, has arranged to acquire Soffes Wood Design of Manhattan. JRS specializes in bank, corporate, healthcare, and retail design. Soffes Wood has expertise in commercial, retail, and multiunit residential developments, and landmark properties. The acquisition, expected to be completed by the end of 2006, will give JRS a presence in New York City and expand its size by over 50 percent. Soffes Wood cofounder and principal Jim Wood will become a consultant to major corporations.

    Dresden · 2006.1015
The new Oriental Gallery for the Zwinger Royal Porcelain Collection, one of the Dresden State Art Collections, has opened in Dresden, Germany. American architect Peter Marino, principal of New York City-based Peter Marino Architect PLLC, designed the gallery, combining authentic historical forms with modern elements. Silk-covered walls, gilded consoles, and mantelpieces evoke the baroque period, when the collection was established. The addition increases the space for the Zwinger Collection by 25 percent.

    Boulder · 2006.1013
The Twenty Ninth Street retail and office development has opened in Boulder, Colorado. CommArts of Boulder worked with SEM Architects Inc. of Denver to plan and design the project. An open-air complex replacing a conventional mall, Twenty Ninth Street reinstates the city's street grid and gives visitors views of the Flatirons, nearby rock formations. The development comprises four "districts" with a total of 850,000 square feet (79,000 square meters) of retail space and 150,000 square feet (14,000 square meters) of office space. Much of the parking is underground. The complex also features a permanent, interactive science exhibit, including a solar-powered sculpture and a "planetary playground," with scale representations of the solar system.

    Kalamazoo · 2006.1011
Construction is underway on the $23 million renovation of Kohrman Hall at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Architecture and engineering firm SmithGroup designed the project. The south wing of the building, which was originally built for engineering, will be reconfigured for art studios, keeping its expansive spaces intact and leaving much of the concrete structure exposed. State-of-the-art mechanical systems will address environmental issues associated with certain art processes. Galleries, a student lounge, and a lobby will add to the School of Art's space. The building's central wing will be renovated into 11 flexible classrooms for use by various programs. A bridge will connect Kohrman Hall to the Richmond Center for Visual Arts. Completion is expected in September 2007.

    Minneapolis · 2006.1010
Three staff members have been named principals based in the Minneapolis, Minnesota, office of Durrant, an architecture, engineering, and construction management firm. William Fredregill, AIA, has over 40 years of experience in all aspects of project process and architectural practice management, including two years with Durrant. Jon Pugh, AIA, has over 30 years of experience in the hospitality and entertainment industries, and has been named marketing principal, with a focus on hospitality design. Nakee Choi, AIA, KIA, consulted to the Minneapolis office for 12 years before joining Durrant as principal in charge of Korean projects.
