PLAYFUL COLORS IN LOS ANGELES SCHOOL

From her desk, principal Patricia Romero can watch children at Dena Primary Center playing in the central courtyard. She also uses the vantage point to admire this new campus in a largely Hispanic neighborhood of East Los Angeles. In the center, the architects established an elliptical amphitheater-style courtyard bordered by an administrative complex and two multipurpose buildings. Next week, writer Allison Milionis will explain how this sorely needed new school has contributed to a community rebirth. (Photo by Christopher Covey)

ONE IMPRESSIVE SHADE OF GREEN

The Jubilee Campus extension of Nottingham University presents a milestone in green architecture. Michael Hopkins and Partners pioneered an innovative strategy — a combination of mechanical and wind-driven ventilation — and brought together a wide range of other green strategies on a former brownfield. Next week Peter Buchanan will describe the building and its sustainability features including the towers designed to promote stack ventilation. (Photo by Martine Hamilton Knight)
