David Ellis, P.E., has joined the Washington, D.C., office of RTKL as principal in the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing group and codirector of engineering for the office. Ellis has 26 years of experience with a variety of commercial, historical, and institutional projects. He previously served as director of engineering for JVP Engineers in Washington, D.C., and as principal for Ellis Engineering PC in Fairfax, Virginia.

Construction of the $35 million Union Station Village apartment complex in Los Angeles, California, is complete. The 273,000-square-foot (25,000-square-meter) complex consists of two five-story buildings straddling the 65-year-old Union Station transit depot, with one building situated partially atop the Metrolink tunnel. The project includes a 72-foot (22-meter) bridge connecting the two buildings at the third floor level. Designed by GMP Architects of Santa Monica, the facility includes a rooftop pool , a fifth-floor gym, two elevated open-air courtyards, and 150,000 square feet (14,000 square meters) of underground parking. Irvine-based R.D. Olson Construction was the general contractor.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently announced approximately $750 million of new construction and renovation on its Cambridge, Massachusetts, campus, including a new Media Lab building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki. MIT expects to break ground for the six-story, 163,000-square-foot (15,000-square-meter) building in spring 2007. The Media Lab facility will be an open, adaptable space, with high levels of interior transparency, to facilitate collaboration. Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects, Inc. of Boston is the executive architectural firm for the project. Construction is already underway on a new graduate residence designed by William Rawn Associates, Architects of Boston. Also in the works is a new home for the Sloan School of Management, designed by Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners of Santa Monica, California, in association with Bruner/ Cott & Associates, Inc. of Cambridge. A new building for the Center for Cancer Research is also planned.

Ground has been broken for the new $65 million Max at Kierland office facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. The six-story, 257,000-square-foot (24,000-square-meter) structure will be located in the Kierland master-planned community. Richard Keating, principal of the Pasadena, California, firm Keating/ Khang Architecture, designed the building.

David Taylor has joined international design, consulting, and engineering firm Arup as associate principal and leader of Arup's performing arts work in the Americas, based in the New York City office. Taylor joins Arup after 21 years with Theatre Projects Consultants. He has led many performing arts projects in the United States, such as the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California; New Amsterdam Theatre in New York; Chicago Shakespeare Theater in Chicago, Illinois; and new homes for orchestras in Seattle, Washington, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His international experience includes projects in Southeast Asia, Japan, Europe, and the United Kingdom.

Ground has been broken for Sheshan Villas, a high-end residential development near Shanghai, China. ZK Group of Shanghai is the developer for the project, which consists of 81 custom homes, designed by ten architecture firms from the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. Completion is expected in 2007.

Architecture and interior design firm ECI/ Hyer, Inc. of Anchorage, Alaska, has promoted Jonathan Steele and Mary Knopf to principal. Steele has 23 years of architecture experience in Alaska, including 13 years with the firm. Knopf has 23 years of experience in education, healthcare, and government projects, including 11 years as ECI/ Hyer's lead interior designer.

Rogers, Arkansas-based PB2 Architecture & Engineering has opened an office in Chicago, Illinois. Richard D. Hayes has joined the firm as chief architect at the new office. Hayes previously served as director of architecture for David Woodhouse Architects of Chicago.

Construction is underway on the $112 million Trump Park Residences, a high-end retirement community in Yorktown, New York. The 141-condominium development is located on 50 acres (20 hectares) overlooking a lake, just west of the new Donald J. Trump State Park. Sullivan Architecture of White Plains designed the project, which consists of three- and four-story buildings with stone and stucco exteriors and private courtyards. Community features include a marble lobby, private movie theater, fitness center, and trails throughout the site.
