Sarofim Research Building by Elizabeth Bollinger The firms of BNIM Architects and Burt Hill have partnered to design a new facility at the Texas Medical Center. The six-story Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building is now home for the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases (IMM). The building's elegant design is, in several ways, a departure from that of conventional research facilities. The 229,000-square-foot (21,000-square-meter) building houses core research laboratories, administrative offices, a 200-seat auditorium, and a large atrium for public events and staff interaction. It also features conference rooms and a series of open spaces specially designed for collaborative scientific discussion. With a high level of security essential in this research facility, the public spaces at the ground floor are transparent while the upper floors are more concealed. The first and second floors contain the lobby, catering kitchen, conference rooms, and the two-story auditorium, which has its own entrance at ground level, with connection to the building interior at the second level. >>> Discuss this article in the Architecture Forum...
