    MICHIGAN AWARDS EXCELLENCE IN ARCHITECTURE

The Michigan Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has announced its annual Excellence in Architecture awards. Sixteen projects designed by Michigan architects received honors in building, interiors, sustainability, and other categories. All of the firms, including Harley Ellis Devereaux, which received an interiors award for their work on their own Chicago office (photo by Anthony May Photography), were cited for their ability to meet the needs of the client in a fresh and creative way. ArchitectureWeek will take a look at this and some of the other award recipients.

    MILLING A BRIDGE

Rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printers and stereolithography have achieved popularity in producing architectural models. But these methods are limited in the size of the models they can produce, and they require expensive materials. So researchers in the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo have been working with computer numerical control (CNC) milling to produce credible architectural models. Next week professor Thomas Seebohm will describe how he and masters student Jonathan Friedman demonstrated the utility of CNC machining by producing a 1:33 scale model of a curvilinear precast concrete bridge structure.
