Also cleverly detailed is the rooftop Parts House Pavilion in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by Johnsen Schmaling Architects. The architects created an outdoor dining room using a steel frame that supports eight panels, which can be configured for a variety of weather conditions and social situations. The panels' retractable canvas top adjusts for total enclosure, limited views, or complete openness. A lighting system transforms the panels into a "celebration of color," according to the jury.
Two projects received recognition in the production housing category. The Bougainvillea Courtyard Homes in Vero Beach, Florida, by Looney Ricks Kiss Architects is a set of four Spanish colonial houses that contrast with their 1970s-style ranch neighbors, but with unconventional site planning to create interior courtyards.
The Barrio Metalico in Tucson, Arizona, by Rob Paulus Architect, is a collection of nine low-cost, energy-efficient houses that nonetheless play artfully with light and volume. Inexpensive materials such as salvaged wood and metal and rainwater-harvesting tanks give the infill housing an industrial character.
The renovation Grand Award went to the additions that Muse Architects designed for the 300-year-old West St. Mary's Manor House in St. Mary's County, Maryland. To avoid harming the authenticity of the existing structure. The architects made a series of pavilions linked to the main house and to one another by windowed galleries with matching siding, windows, roofing, and shutters.
There were three recipients of the Grand Award for custom house of more than 3,500 square feet (325 square meters): a house on Beverly Ranch Road in Beverly Hills, California, by Studio Pali Fekete architects (SPF:a); Ski House in Sugar Bowl, California, by Mark Horton/ Architecture (MH/A); and a house on the Connecticut River, Essex, Connecticut, by Centerbrook Architects and Planners.
The jury for Residential Architect magazine's awards program included: Natalye Appel, FAIA, Natalye Appel + Associates Architects, Houston, Texas; Robert Orr, AIA, Robert Orr & Associates, New Haven, Connecticut; Anne Fougeron, AIA, Fougeron Architecture, San Francisco; Heather Cass, FAIA, Cass & Associates Architects, Washington, D.C.; Manny Gonzalez, AIA, KTGY Group, Santa Monica, California; and George Pappageorge, FAIA, Pappageorge/ Haymes, Chicago.
