Question

True or false: mortar and grout are to ceramic tile installation as grout and mortar are to concrete masonry unit (CMU) installation.

Answer

True. In ceramic tile installations, mortar is the backfill while grout goes between joints. It is reversed with CMU: grout is the block fill, and mortar is the material between joints.
