Preliminary designs have been revealed for a new £55.5 million library at the University of Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom. Danish firm schmidt hammer lassen, winner of the university's design competition, envisions the 215,000-square-foot (20,000-square-meter) library as a ten-story rectangular prism organized around a curvilinear central atrium the entire height of the tower. In addition to housing the library's main collection of books and other media, the building will provide environmentally controlled storage and a conservation lab for the library's rare books and archival collections, some dating back to the 15th century. Public spaces will include a public square, a cafe, exhibition space, and a rooftop terrace. The university will seek a rating by the Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) performance-assessment system. The final design is expected in fall 2006; construction is scheduled for 2008 to 2010.
