    TWO HOTELS AS FANTASY RETREATS

Two hotels — one small and one very small — illustrate the use of light and reflection to not only transform space, but to create a world unlike any that a hotel guest might inhabit day-to-day. The 160-room Innside Premium Hotel in Munich, Germany, by Jahn Lykouria Design (photo by Tom Vack), capitalizes on its sweeping view of nearby towers and the distant Alps. Half-a-world away, the 16-room Hotel Kassel Grimm in Shanghai, China, by Hank M. Chao, of MoHen Design International, features intense colors, mysterious light, and reflective surfaces. Next week ArchitectureWeek contributing editor Michael J. Crosbie will explain how both designs offer unusual nighttime experiences.

    CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Joan E. Goody, FAIA is a principal of the Boston firm Goody Clancy and the recipient of the 2005 Boston Society of Architects Award of Honor. She and her firm have made important contributions to the profession and to the community through academic, public, commercial, residential, and preservation projects. Next week, in an interview with architect Rebecca Barnes, FAIA, Goody will describe her experiences and explain her drive to pursue work in this profession, beginning during a time when women architects were a rarity.
