    RETURN FROM THE BURBS

When the construction dust finally settles, the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles will have its own urban center. Ten years ago nobody would have believed it, but ever since an adaptive reuse ordinance was adopted in 1999 to eliminate many regulatory barriers, construction investment in downtown Los Angeles has ballooned to $12.2 billion. Next week, writer Allison Milionis will explain why former suburban commuters are discovering urban living as an attractive alternative to freeway gridlock.

    ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has announced its 2006 list of the "most endangered historic places" in the United States. These buildings are under attack by hurricanes, development pressures, or simple neglect. One of these structures is the Fort Snelling Upper Post in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Located strategically on a large scenic promontory overlooking the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, Fort Snelling is in a state of disrepair. Next week we'll look at this and the other endangered sites.
