The Museum of Contemporary Art | Denver recently broke ground for its new $15 million building in downtown Denver, Colorado. David Adjaye and his London firm Adjaye/ Associates designed the 27,000-square-foot (2,500-square-meter) facility, which will have five galleries on two levels. LEED certification is a goal for the new museum, scheduled to open in June 2007.

The Portland, Oregon, office of SRG Partnership, Inc. has promoted Jocelyn Bates Helgerson, AIA, LEED, from project manager to senior associate. An education specialist, Helgerson's current projects include the Oregon Institute of Technology Center for Health Professions, the Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary Academic Center, and master planning for Seattle University.

Restoration and renovation of the 1928 former Brownsville High School and Central Middle School building in Brownsville, Texas, has been completed. The $3 million project included refurbishment of the facade, terrazzo hallways, wood classroom floors, and auditorium seating; installation of lifts and an elevator for compliance with the Americans with Diabilities Act; and conversion of classrooms to offices for the building's new use as the Brownsville Independent School District's Central Administration Building. The Texas firm PBK Architects, Inc. was the project architect.

The new Mercedes-Benz Museum opened May 20, 2006, in Stuttgart, Germany. Designed by UN Studio of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to house the museum's collection of 160 vehicles, the building features 177,600 square feet (16,500 square meters) of daylit exhibition space connected by two interweaving spiral ramps that lead visitors through the museum from top to bottom. The project budget was €50 million.

Construction has begun on a new 33-story residential highrise building in Phoenix, Arizona, currently expected to be the tallest residential structure in Arizona when completed. San Diego, California-based Tucker Sadler Architects is providing full architectural services for the $75 million project and also interior design services for the building common areas. The 524,000-square-foot (48,700-square-meter) building will feature 202 residential units and seven floors of parking. Completion is scheduled for early 2008. Greg Mueller and Art Castro serve as principals-in-charge for Tucker Sadler.

The Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Reserve, Louisiana, is approximately 70 percent complete and is expected to open in January 2007. Located midway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the 93,000-square-foot (8,600-square-meter) facility will provide housing and medical services for 156 disabled and chronically ill veterans. The architect for the $20 million project is Guidry Beazley Architects of Lafayette. Two other military facilities are planned within a few blocks of the 26-acre (11-hectare) parcel: Design work has begun for a temporary veterans outpatient clinic expected to open by December 2006. Initial design work is complete for a 40,200-square-foot (3,700-square-meter) Army National Guard Readiness Center. Construction on the center is expected to begin in summer 2006. Remson-Haley-Herpin Architects of Baton Rouge is the architect for the project, which is estimated to cost at least $14 million. The facility will become home to the 1084th Transportation Company.

The City University of New York (CUNY) is implementing a plan for $2.5 billion in construction over five years. Planned projects at CUNY campuses in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens include building renovations, replacements, and additions, some of which are already under construction. A $186 million mixed-use facility at City College of Technology in downtown Brooklyn will provide both academic space and funding from the development above it. Genova, Italy-based Renzo Piano Building Workshop and New York-based Perkins Eastman will design the 262,000-square-foot (24,300-square-meter) complex, expected to be completed by December 2009. Construction is underway on the $66.6 million renovation of a vacant library at City College of New York in Manhattan to house its School of Architecture. New York-based Rafael Viñoly Architects is designing the 105,000-square-foot (9,700-square-meter) center, which will feature a rooftop amphitheater. Completion is expected in fall 2009.
