    Coverings Awards 2006

    In an age when sleek glass and steel seem to dominate design headlines, there is still room for creativity in the venerable media of stone and tile. To celebrate accomplishments with these materials, the international trade show and conference "Coverings," managed by National Trade Productions and sponsored by several industry associations, recently presented the winners of two awards programs.

    At the April 2006 Coverings show, citations were made for the Prism Awards for marble and stone and the Spectrum Awards for tile in institutional, commercial, and residential applications.

    The grand prize in this year's Prism awards program was presented to the 90 West Street Building in lower Manhattan, a survivor of the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. The historic-landmark 90 West Street Building (1905), designed by Cass Gilbert, suffered facade damage during the collapse of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

    Gilbert's facade is famous for its ornamentation, with sculpted busts of lions, eagles, Native American chiefs, and other symbolic Americana that were among his favorite motifs. Restoration of the granite facade was executed by Conventional Stone & Marble Corporation.   >>>
