Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #286
True or false:
a) Efflorescence can cause spalling.
b) Ictinus designed and built the Parthenon.
c) A "quirk" is a V-shaped incision in a moulding.
a) False. Efflorescence is an aesthetic problem (the encrustation of soluble salts on a masonry surface), whereas spalling is more structural (when small fragments are removed from the surface due to frost, chemical action, or building movement).
b) True, with Callicrates and Phidias.
