Construction continues on the new BMW Welt building in Munich, Germany. Vienna, Austria-based COOP HIMMELB(L)AU designed the 786,000-square-foot (73,000-square-meter) building to incorporate vehicle delivery and "brand experience" areas with restaurants, shops, and an event forum, all under an undulating glass-and-steel roof supported by a double-cone-shaped structure. Located near the BMW corporate headquarters, museum, and Munich production facility, BMW Welt is scheduled to open in spring 2007.

A former executive at Arquitectonica in Miami, Florida, Jenkins has 16 years of experience. Construction has begun on the $2.1 billion Freedom Tower at the World Trade Center site in New York, New York. Originally designed by Daniel Libeskind of
Studio Daniel Libeskind, then redesigned twice by David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the 1,776-foot- (541-meter-) high tower is now scheduled to open in 2011. As the tower rises from the square floor plan of its base, the square edges will be chamfered back, transitioning to an octagonal floor plan halfway up, then culminating in a square plan rotated 45 degrees from the base.

The Chicago, Illinois, firm Loebl Schlossman & Hackl has hired three new architectural design staff members: Ewa J. Hally, Assoc. AIA; Aaron S. W. Greene; and Hung-Wei Chen. Hally has 16 years of experience with a concentration in healthcare facilities. She previously worked for Proteus Group in Chicago. Currently she is working on surgery and ICU renovations for Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois. Greene has worked on a range of projects, from design of high education facilities to master planning for a mixed-use development. He previously worked for Campbell Tiu Campbell in Chicago. Greene is currently working on the restoration and development of The Palmer House in downtown Chicago. Chen previously worked for Mark Demsky Architects in Chicago. He is currently working on the Advanced Chemical Technology Building at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's new U.S. Arid-Land Agricultural Research Center in Maricopa, Arizona, south of Phoenix, is now complete. The $20.3 million facility for the consolidation of the U.S. Water Conservation Laboratory and the Western Cotton Research Laboratory includes laboratory and office space, laboratory support space, a headhouse, greenhouses, a hydraulics lab, shops, and a central plant. SmithGroup designed the 100,000-square-foot (9,000-square-meter) center to maximize natural daylight in research spaces.
