Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #284
Question
What's the difference between a "molly bolt" and a "toggle bolt"?
Answer
A molly bolt includes a threaded insert which is set in a drilled hole in a material. When the bolt is threaded into the insert, the insert expands and resists pull-out due to its friction fit. A toggle bolt has a component that springs open when pushed through a hole to the backside of a material. Tightening the bolt from the front pulls the flared component arms against the back, clamping the bolt in place.
