Construction nears completion for redevelopment of Barcelona's historic bullring by London-based Richard Rogers Partnership and co-architects Alonso Balaguer y Arquitectos Asociados. The facade of the 1898 building is being refurbished and the 484,000-square-foot (45,000-square-meter) bullring converted into a multiuse complex, including a series of commercial, entertainment, health, and leisure spaces focused around a central event space, with multiplex cinemas on the third and fourth floors. A dome floats only 33 feet (10 meters) over the bullring, kept shallow to reduce the visual impact of the building from a nearby historical fountain.

Construction is complete for renovation of 87,500 square feet (8,100 square meters) of research and development space for Qualcomm, Inc. in San Diego, California. Architects Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker was the project architect. Located on the first four floors of a 10-story, multitenant office building, the space was demolished and redesigned to include 14,700 square feet (1,400 square meters) of computer lab space and 62,800 square feet (5,800 square meters) of office, conference, and administrative space.

The 17,000-square-foot (1,600-square-meter) first floor of a 1920s toy warehouse in the "Artist District" of Los Angeles, California, has been renovated for new commercial uses. Environetics of Los Angeles emphasized the "Goth" style of the primary tenant's clothing design studio by keeping many of the original building elements, including the concrete floor, most of the old columns, and the ceiling's solid raw wood beams, steel braces, pipes, and conduits, despite having to completely rebuild the ceiling for sound attenuation for existing upstairs condominium owners. Awnings were added to windows that had once been warehouse doors to alleviate heat and reduce energy consumption.

A former New York City asylum and hospital on Roosevelt Island in the East River will reopen April 17, 2006, as a luxury apartment complex. The Octagon building first opened as the New York Lunatic and Pauper Society in 1841, later becoming the Metropolitan Hospital. The existing Octagon tower has been fully rehabilitated with its earlier grand cupola to resemble its appearance in the early 1900s. The 7-story spiral staircase, mentioned by Charles Dickens in American Notes, has been reinvented to better serve common areas. Becker + Becker of Fairfield, Connecticut, is the developer and architect for the project. Rockwell Group designed the 30,000 square feet (2,800 square meters) of lobby, gallery space, and residences. Two 14-story wings flanking the Octagon tower comprise 500 rental units, including 100 dedicated affordable. The building won a Green Apple award from the City of New York for the inclusion of 250 rooftop solar panels, state-of-the-art insulated windows, and 40 percent recycled building materials. The site also includes a 2-acre (0.8-hectare) "ecological" park.

The design has been completed for the new Learning Resource Commons at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Sioux City-based Cannon, Moss, Brygger & Associates leads the architecture team for the project, which also includes specialists in architecture, engineering, and programming from four offices of Durrant (Dubuque, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin). Estimated cost of construction is $14 million for the 75,000-square-foot (7,000-square-meter) building. The design includes space for 180,000 library volumes and an abundance of natural light-filled reading spaces, aiming to evoke images of both traditional libraries and places of worship. An exterior of terra cotta-colored brick, glass, and terne metal will complement other buildings on campus.

Construction has begun on Village Walk at EastLake, a 162,000-square-foot (15,000-square-meter) upscale retail development in the master-planned community of EastLake in Chula Vista, California. Already 76 percent pre-leased, Village Walk will include tenants such as Borders Books, Henry's Marketplace, PETCO, Pier One, and Trader Joe's. Sudberry Development, Inc., is developing the project. Fehlman LaBarre of San Diego is the project architect for the project. Stuart Engineering is the civil engineer. Nowell Associates is the landscape architect. Construction is scheduled for completion in February 2007.

Allen W. Ho, AIA, has joined RTKL Associates Inc. as a principal in the firm's health care practice. He is based in RTKL's Los Angeles office. Ho has over a decade of experience designing, planning, and managing development of large-scale hospitals in both the United States and Asia. His design experience includes the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Heart Center in Cleveland, Ohio; the Hsintien Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan; and the Tan Tzu Hospital in Taichung, Taiwan. He was also involved in the design of the Bay Park Community Hospital in Oregon, Ohio, and the Defiance Hospital in Defiance, Ohio. Prior to joining RTKL, Ho served as an associate at NBBJ in Columbus, Ohio.
