The Minneapolis, Minnesota office of LEO A DALY recently promoted Robert Egge, AIA to corporate director for the Department of Defense (DOD) and James Fredeen, AIA to director of government programs. Although Egge’s new position is national in scope, he will remain based at the firm’s Minneapolis office. Egge has been responsible for more than 30 DOD projects having a total construction value in excess of $500 million. These projects have been primarily for the Air Force and have been recognized with 24 Air Force design awards. Freeden is a long-standing member of the LEO A DALY team and has more than 30 years of wide-ranging experience.

Final development work has started on the Shopping City Zagreb, a complex on the edge of the Croatian capital, which is the largest such project being planned in the country today. The 10,764,000-square-foot (1,000,000-square-meter) site is adjacent to toll gates marking the entrance of the A2 motorway into the city. Work will start next year on the first phase of development, Shopping Center Zagreb, which has an area of 753,475 square feet (70,000 square meters). Opening is planned for early 2008. Retail architecture specialists ATP Architects and Engineers, Vienna, are in charge of design for the Shopping Center Zagreb, in cooperation with the Zagreb sister-office of the ATP Group. The center has been designed as a huge ring with a continuous triangular shopping mall linking three dominant glazed plazas.

Mark Upton has joined Tucker Sadler Architects as a project designer at the Rogers, Arkansas office of the San Diego, California-based architecture firm. In his new position, Upton is designing Seven Hills, a transitional housing facility located in Rogers. Upton brings nine years of experience in the architectural design industry to Tucker Sadler Architects.

Construction is complete for the 6,200-square-foot (575-square-meter) renovation of the Downtown YMCA in San Diego, California. Tucker Sadler Architects was responsible for architectural and interior design services for the project. The scope of work included redesign of the space to reflect an urban, industrial feel, with renovation of the walls, flooring, the downstairs lobby, and the upstairs aerobics room and track, all of which were originally built in 1924. Upgrades also were made to the HVAC system, reception area, weight room, and pool area. Environmentally responsible materials, including VOC-free paint and recycled materials, were used for every element of the renovation. Robert Noble served as principal-in-charge for Tucker Sadler Architects, with Bill Adelson as project manager, and Ana Seabra-Gomez as senior interior designer.

IA Interior Architects announced that Julio Braga has been promoted to principal in the firm’s New York office. In addition, Richard Chui, Christopher Matorana, and Alicia Worthington have been promoted to associate. Braga has been IA’s director of design since 2005, and is currently involved in major projects for Merrill Lynch, Marsh and McLennon, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Daniel Boulud’s Dinex Group. Prior to joining IA, he was a founding partner of braga oris associates and was the design director of the envirobranding studio at WalkerGroup/CNI.

Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois broke ground for their new Emergency Department, designed by Loebl Schlossman & Hackl. The new Emergency Department (ED) will allow for the consolidation and enhancement of emergency services, providing a state-of the-art facility to accommodate approximately 70,000 visits annually. A large triage area and a fast track area separated from the main ED allow for more efficient patient flow and response to varying levels of patient need. Bowman, Barrett & Associates provided structural engineering; KJWW Engineering Consultants provided MEP engineering; and Eriksson Engineering Associates provided civil engineering.

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks has officially opened the newest landmark of Melbourne, Australia's skyline, the Ernst & Young Building, which was designed and constructed by Bovis Lend Lease. The $140 million 34-story tower rises from the former Herald & Weekly Times buildings on the southeast edge of Melbourne's central business district. The original building at the base of the tower was converted into a four-story Soho-style luxury residential complex, the Herald Living Apartments.

With Phase I site work complete, the second phase of construction has begun on the 331,000-square-foot (30,750-square-meter) Genetic Medicine Building (GMB) at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. When completed in December 2007, the seven-story (plus mechanical penthouse) research building will house three School of Medicine departments along with additional space for the School of Pharmacy. The GMB is the third major design project undertaken by the architecture firm Lord, Aeck & Sargent in recent years at UNC, Chapel Hill.

Brent S. Compton, AIA has joined the Seattle, Washington office of Northwest Architectural Company as an associate and senior project manager. Compton has nearly 20 years of diverse experience in the educational sector and will focus on K-12 projects. He has worked on 22 high schools in the Puget Sound area and recently served as lead construction administrator for The Evergreen State College Seminar II complex, one of Washington's first Gold LEED-certified projects.
