    "GRANITE STATE" SALUTES DESIGN EXCELLENCE

Eight projects were recognized in January 2006 by the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects annual awards program. One honor award recipient was DeStefano Architects, LLC, of Portsmouth, for a house perched high on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Jutting forms and crashing volumes mirror the relationship between land and sea on this craggy Maine shoreline. Next week we'll look at this and some of the other award winners.

    COLONIAL LEGACY AT RISK

Southeast Asian cities display many contradictions: an indelible amalgam of the past and what the modern is believed to represent. It is not unusual to see highrise construction workers swaying on bamboo scaffolding. Feng Shui still informs the work of many architects and property developers. Next week writer Ian Morley will show how Rangoon, Burma, known internally as Yangon, Myanmar, though ruled by a secretive, military-led regime, is a symbolic marriage of ancient philosophy with modernity, giving the city its distinct architectural character.
