LAKESIDE HOUSE

Nestled in the foliage of Chile’s Lake Colico, Lakeside House (photo by Guy Wenborne) is an expansive stone, glass, steel, and concrete structure that places its inhabitants in the heart of nature. Architect Cristian Undurraga has designed a summer house that combines a forbidding exterior with an open and permissive interior using his trademark harmony of traditional and modern materials. Writer Paul Harris will tell us more about it.

URBAN CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament (1889) in downtown Sacramento, California was designed by architect Bryan Clinch in a renaissance style reminiscent of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. While the cathedral (photo by David Wakely) has remained an impressive local landmark, by the turn of the 21st century it had deteriorated and lacked the strength to withstand the next big earthquake. Brian Libby will explain how the firm Beyer Blinder Belle repaired, restored, and reinforced the cathedral without damaging its historic character.
