    TEN-YEAR HOUSE DESIGN

Any telephone user knows how frustrating it is to be "on hold." When it's an entire design project that's been put on hold, however, the challenges add up. When there's a 10-year delay, building codes change, and the people involved may experience personal growth. When Pugh + Scarpa of Santa Monica, California saw a house design process stretch out to ten years, they treated it, finally, as an opportunity to inject an old project with new ideas. Next week, writer Leigh Christy will show us how the recently completed result succeeds in framing compelling views. Photo by Marvin Rand.

    PALLADIO AWARDS FOR TRADITIONAL DESIGN

The fifth annual Palladio Award competition — named in honor of renaissance architect Andrea Palladio — has recognized ten architecture firms for their work in traditional design. The projects include both restoration of historic buildings and new buildings designed according to classical principles. For instance, the firm Historical Concepts gave a fresh interpretation of the Greek temple to a small two-bedroom cottage with trellises that mimic traditional fluted columns. Next week we'll look at more examples.
