Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #276
Question
Asphalt emulsions are often used on below-grade basement foundations. Will this coating give you a damp-proof or a waterproof application? In general, what is the fundamental difference between a damp-proof and waterproof application?
Answer
An asphalt emulsion will give you a damp-proof application. This means it will "resist" the penetration of water. If you really do not want any water to come through the wall you will need to specify a waterproof system which "prevent" the penetration of water.
