DE NEW DE YOUNG MUSEUM

With its copper skin and twisting nine-story spire, the recently completed de Young Museum in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is the work of designers Herzog & de Meuron and principal architects Fong & Chan. But its unseen qualities may be more remarkable than its impressive first impression. Next week writer Lisa Ashmore will explain how, unlike the original structure, the new de Young will be able to withstand a seismic shaking on its site near the San Andreas fault.

TENNESSEE WALTZES WITH DESIGN FLARE

The Tennessee chapter of the American Institute of Architects recently announced 16 projects in its annual awards program. One of the Award of Excellence recipients is the Hunter Museum of American Art (photo by Tim Griffith) in Chattanooga, designed by Randall Stout Architecture Inc. and Derthick, Henley & Wilkerson Architects. Next week we'll take a closer look at the museum on its dramatic cliff-top setting as well as some of the other 15 projects.
