HOUSE FOR GERMAN PHOTOGRAPHER

Nestled on the edge of a town in southwest Germany is the Fleishman House (photo by Peer Oliver Brecht). Its owner, a photographer, craved visually quiet surroundings to counteract the visual bombardment of his profession. One-third studio, two-thirds dwelling, the house is gracious and open, characterized as "not so much a style as a lifestyle choice," according to its architect, Maki Kuwayama.

BUILDING OSAKA'S ART MUSEUM

Until recently, Osaka, Japan's National Museum of Contemporary Art was at the edge of the city. To effect a relocation to the city's cultural center, a new museum had to be built largely underground. For architect Cesar Pelli, the question was how to create a powerful image for an almost entirely submerged building. Next week author Raul A.
