    Virginia AIA Awards

    by ArchitectureWeek

Eight projects by Virginia architects recently received kudos from the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects. The Awards for Excellence in Architecture went to a broad diversity of project types, from a futuristic transit station to a comforting mausoleum garden; from a woodland house to a fabric-roofed convention center.

One of two honor awards went to Morgan Boulevard Station in Landover, Maryland designed by HSMM/STV, a joint venture made up of Hayes Seay Mattern & Mattern and STV Incorporated. The station is part of an expansion of the Washington DC Metropolitan Area Transit Authority system, and the building is intended to serve as a model for the design of future above-ground stations.

The station's open design and transparent walls were designed to enhance passenger well-being, especially during dark winter rush hours and evening sporting events at the adjacent FedEx Field. Circulation is orchestrated to manage passenger flow during busy travel times. The emphasis on a steel and glass material palette is a deliberate departure from that of older Metro stations dominated by exposed concrete.

The awards jury was impressed by the openness of the station. "The airiness comes from the way structure is used," they said. "It's not just the shape and the expanse of the space, but it has to do with the way the structure is perforated. And it is a rather complex structural form that's been handled rigorously. The image is a very beautiful one for a public space. It's simple but rich."   >>>
