Robert J. Hopkins, P.E. has joined RTKL as principal/ director of commissioning for the firm's Applied Technology Group, which is responsible for integrating the architecture and engineering services demanded by mission-critical technology intensive operations. He is based in the firm's Baltimore, Maryland office. As director of commissioning, Hopkins will be responsible for business development, hiring of key staff, and quality control. Hopkins brings more than 30 years of experience to the firm, specifically in electrical power engineering. Prior to joining RTKL, Hopkins served as the design construction and commissioning for PENRAN - Taylor Army Server Farm in Washington, D.C

Mark P. Finlay Architects, AIA, is codesigner of a golf club project that Golf Digest Magazine has named “America's Best New Private Course of 2005.” The Alotian Club, located near Little Rock, Arkansas, is situated on a 1,200-acre (486-hectare) property, and was patterned after Augusta National, designed by Tom Fazio. Finlay’s Southern Colonial-style complex of buildings at Alotian includes a 30,000-square-foot (2790-square-meter) clubhouse, four eight-bedroom guest cottages, a gate house, receiving building, teaching facility, and maintenance outbuildings.

Smith Consulting Architects has construction documents underway for Lot 40 of Bressi Spectrum, a 119,000-square-foot (11,055-square-meter) office/R&D project on a 9.63-acre (3.9-hectare) campus within Bressi Ranch Business Park, located in Carlsbad, California. Smith Consulting Architects was retained by Bressi Spectrum, LLC, with Ken Satterlee directing the $10 million project. The scope of work for Smith Consulting Architects encompasses the design and construction management of 15 office buildings. Design features of the project include tower elements at the entries, bronze reflective glass, and stone veneer. The project also incorporates outdoor courtyards with trellis-covered patios overlooking a nearby canyon. Gary Baker is vice president of design for Smith Consulting Architects, with Gary Potter as senior project architect.

Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. (SGH) announced the expansion of its senior management team with the promotion of ten employees to principal and associate principal positions. The staff promotions span several SGH offices. In SGH’s Boston, Massachusetts office, Brent Gabby was named principal; and Vince Cammalleri, Jeff Ceruti, Rasko Ojdrovic, and Pedro Sifre were appointed associate principal. William “Skip” Freet was named associate principal in SGH’s Los Angeles, California office. Dave McCormick, based in the San Francisco, California office, was promoted to principal. Also in San Francisco, Chris Decareau, Stephen Harris, and Eric Schroter were appointed associate principal.

Jose Flores and Michele Gonzalez have joined Graham Downes Architecture as design technicians of the San Diego, California-based architectural firm. The new designers will assist the firm with space planning, design development, construction documents, and construction administration for tenant improvement projects. They currently are working on the Charlotte Russe and Brighton Collectibles retail store accounts. Flores brings to Graham Downes Architecture more than seven years experience in the architectural design industry. Most recently, he served five years as a designer for A&I Design Solutions. Gonzalez returns to the firm with five years of experience in the design field, which includes two years of previous employment at Graham Downes. Prior to rejoining the firm, she served two-and-a-half years as a project designer for Seating Concepts, LLC.

Fiji's newest hotel and spa resort has officially opened. The Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, a $45.8 million-dollar project, is located on Denarau Island, a tourist destination 20 minutes from Fiji's international airport at Nadi. Mandara Spa has been appointed to manage the resort's spa. The hotel design includes distinctive Fijian features and is spread over 26 acres (11 hectares) of landscaped gardens. It features 296 rooms and suites, three restaurants and three bars, the largest conference facilities in Fiji, a lagoon–style freeform pool, and more.

Construction has begun on Duke University Marine Laboratory's new Ocean Science Teaching Center (OSTC), designed by Raleigh, North Carolina architect Frank Harmon, FAIA. Located on Piver's Island at the head of the Beaufort Inlet in North Carolina, the OSTC will provide state-of-the-art teaching facilities for Duke's Marine Lab. The new building will include three primary spaces: laboratories, a lecture hall, and a commons overlooking Beaufort Channel. Building materials will include wood, wood shingles, glass, and cement panels. To obtain a gold LEED rating, the building will feature photovoltaic cells, geothermal heating and cooling, cisterns to collect rainwater for landscaping needs, and recycled materials will be used wherever possible.
