The principals of HuntonBrady Architects, an Orlando, Florida-based firm, are pleased to announce the transition of the firm's top management to the sixth generation of ownership with the promotion of Charles W. Cole, Jr., AIA, to president and managing principal. The announcement follows the untimely death of president and managing principal Fred H. Pryor, AIA, on December 4. Cole, previously vice-president and principal for healthcare design, will assume management responsibilities of the 58-year-old firm, overseeing financial performance, administration, and business practices.

The Thornton-Tomasetti Group of New York, New York has announced that William W. Lukens, AIA has been promoted to associate. A licensed architect, Lukens brings over 30 years of experience in the evaluation and design of building envelopes, including curtain wall and roofing. He joined the Philadelphia office of Thornton-Tomasetti Group's LZA Technology Division in 2000 and is currently responsible for the investigation and anticipation of potential design and construction problems on a wide range of developments, among other responsibilities.

The National Park Service has started construction on the Twin Creeks Science and Education Center in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennesee, a first-of-its-kind National Park Service research facility that will support the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI). The ATBI is an initiative to document all life forms in this half a million-acre (200,000 hectare) national park and help scientists make critical decisions about protecting and preserving the park's ecosystem. The architectural firm of Lord, Aeck & Sargent designed Twin Creeks as a high-performance, sustainable laboratory facility. Construction of the $4.4 million Twin Creeks Science and Education Center should be completed in the fall of 2006.

Cannon Design announces that Steven G. Copenhagen has joined the firm as principal. Copenhagen will lead Cannon Design's national laboratory planning and programming practice under the Cannon Copenhagen name, further expanding the firm's science and technology offerings both regionally and nationally. Cannon Copenhagen, based in San Francisco, California, will support Cannon's science and technology planning initiatives at 14 offices located across the United States and Canada.

McIntosh Poris Associates has announced the promotions of Joel Thomas Schmidt and John Skok to associates. In their new roles at the firm, located in Birmingham, Michigan, both will be responsible for all phases of design, marketing, production, and supervision of project teams. In the past, both designers have held positions in award-winning projects in downtown Detroit: Skok served as project designer on Club Panacea, which won an AIA Michigan award, and Schmidt worked as project manager on the Park Shelton renovation, which won a Detroit Home design award.

Also, Sowmya Parthasarathy, director of SMWM LLP since 2001, has been named an associate principal. Parthasarathy, AICP, LEED accredited, holds a bachelors degree in architecture from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, India, and an MS degree in urban design from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Smith Consulting Architects has submitted for approval the design of a 57,000-square-foot (5,300-square-meter) office campus encompassing 4.7 acres (1.9 hectares) off of Ruffin Road in San Diego, California. Smith Consulting Architects has been retained by Soledad Development Group, LLC for the $15 million project. The scope of work for Smith Consulting Architects entails the design of five office buildings. The project was designed to impart a clean, high-tech appearance, and incorporates the use of aluminum-clad eyebrows, bronze reflective glass, and stone veneer. Gary Baker is vice-president of design for Smith Consulting Architects, with Gary Potter as senior project architect.

One York Street, a block-long pre-Civil War building in Tribeca, New York City, is being redesigned for modern condominium living, and features a 14-story glass tower. The redesign was done by Enrique Norten, a Mexican-born architect and one of the World Trade Center Memorial Competition judges. When completed, the building will contain 40 loft units, 25 of them located within the original structure. Floors seven through 14 will have wrap-around terraces or large balconies, offering residents 360-degree views of the Manhattan skyline.
