Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #269
Question
What is concrete curling and what is the typical cause?
Answer
Curling is the tendency for slab edges to bend up. It is usually caused by differential shrinkage of the cement paste in various parts of the slab. Basically, curling occurs when water leaves one side of a slab more rapidly than the other side.
