GTM Architects, a full service architectural and design firm located in Bethesda, Maryland, announced that Janeen Skelly has been appointed as an associate director of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Potomac Valley Chapter. In this role, Skelly will be responsible for all activities related to associate AIA members. The AIA appoints its executives by nomination and the incoming president, Melanie Hennigan, appointed Skelly during the annual meeting, where a swearing-in ceremony of all new board members took place.

The international firm Dos Architects has been selected to design the new Infinity Tower, a 93-floor tower to be located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Plans for the building include solar panels to provide up to 25 percent of the total energy consumed within the tower. Mass and thickness will give inertia to the building, as well as thermal resistance to temperature fluctuations. The building’s color was inspired by the sand of the dunes.

JLG Architects, through Alerus Property Management, is nearing completion on 21 luxury loft and flat apartments in the restored Metropolitan Opera House in downtown Grand Forks, North Dakota. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Metropolitan Opera House was built in 1890 as the premiere entertainment venue in the region. The renovated Opera House has been designed for conservation with features such as high-efficiency toilets, heating systems, and lighting, as well as operable windows and water-efficient landscaping.

JetBlue Airways Corp. has revealed design plans for Terminal 5 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in the low-fare airline’s home town of New York, New York. The JetBlue project team includes Arup as planner and design manager, Gensler as terminal architects, DMJM Harris as airside/ landside civil engineers, Rockwell Group as interior architect, and Turner Construction for construction management. The three-year project has an $875 million budget, and features a new 635,000 square foot (59,000 square meter) terminal, 26 gates capable of up to 250 daily flights, capacity for 20 million customers per year, and connection to the historic Eero Saarinen terminal.

San Jose, California has joined the trend toward urban living and downtown revitalization with the groundbreaking of Central Place, the city's first mixed-use high-rise project. Designed by San Francisco-based SB Architects, Central Place will have 402 residences in two towers, 68,000 square feet (6,320 square meters) of retail and restaurant space, and 338 public parking spaces. The 24-story towers will be the highest residential structures in San Jose.

The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco chapter (AIA San Francisco) has announced the incorporation of a new 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, the Center for Architecture + Design. Scheduled to open in Spring 2006 within the historic Hallidie Building, the Center for Architecture + Design will promote an appreciation for the built environment, as well as consider design in a broader sense. Year-round programming will include lectures, tours, exhibitions, and special programs that aim to reveal the richness of the design arts. San Francisco, California firm Quezada Architecture was chosen to create the new home of the Center for Architecture + Design.
